What is Picea torano
Tigertail spruce or Harimomi in Japanese ,(Scientific name: Picea torano),is an evergreen coniferous tree native to the cool temperate zones of Japan, belonging to the genus Picea in the family Pinaceae. It is also known by its alternative name, Baramomi (Rose fir).
It grows naturally in mountainous areas from southern Tohoku to northern Kyushu.
The tree reaches a height of 20 to 35 meters, with a trunk diameter of about 1 meter. Its bark is grayish reddish-brown.
The leaves are green, needle-like, and measure 1.5–2.5 cm in length.
Harimomi is monoecious, and in June, reddish-purple male flowers bloom at the branch tips, while light green or light purple female flowers stand upright on the branches.
It is used as a park tree, a Christmas tree, and its wood is utilized for timber and pulp.
Etymology
The Japanese name "Harimomi" (針樅) derives from its sharp, needle-like leaves and its resemblance to fir trees (Momi in Japanese).
The alternative name "Baramomi" (薔薇樅) refers to its sharp leaves, which resemble the thorns of roses.
