What is Ponerorchis joo-iokiana
Ponerorchis joo-iokiana or grass-like leaved orchi (scientific name: Ponerorchis joo-iokiana) is a perennial herb native to Japan and the Korean Peninsula, belonging to the family Orchidaceae. It grows wild in open grassland in subalpine areas in Fukushima, Tochigi and Chubu prefectures. The plant is 10 to 30 cm tall and produces 2 to 3 lanceolate leaves.
From July to August, it produces flower stalks from egg-shaped tuber, and from the tip of the stalks grows a raceme of inflorescences, producing 3 to 8 reddish-purple lip-shaped flowers on each stem.
The upper (dorsal) forehead is 1 cm long. The lip petals are 1.5 cm long with a purple spot at the base and a straight thallus 1.5 to 1.7 cm long.
Scientific and Japanese Names of Ponerorchis joo-iokiana
It was first described in 1902 by Dr. Tomitaro Makino under the scientific name "Orchis joo-iokiana", which was later changed to "Ponerorchis joo-iokiana". The current genus name "Ponerorchis" means "Poner (small)" + "orchis (orchid)," and the species minor name "joo-iokiana" is a dedication to the collectors Jo Kazuma and Fumiya Ioki.
The Japanese name "Nyoho-chidori," "Nyoho," refers to the fact that it was collected on Mt. Nyoho,and the name "chidori" refers to the flower's shape, which was thought to resemble a chidori(plover) in flight.
