What is Pear

The pear , nashi pear, Wa nashi, sand pear or Russet apple pear (Scientific name: Pyrus pyrifolia) , native to China and Europe, is a deciduous tree belonging to the family Rosaceae and the genus Pyrus, which refers to fruit trees and fruits. The original species was introduced to Japan from China at an early date, and the wild version is called yamanashi (P. pyrifolia var. pyrifolia), and the cultivated variety that was improved from it is now called wanashi (Pyrus pyrifolia var. culta).
Pears are grown all over the world. It is called 'Nashi Pear', 'Sand Pear' or 'Russet apple pea' in English, or 'Shashi' in Chinese. In China, it is called "Shashi" (meaning "sand pear"). The Japanese pear (P. pyrifolia var. culta), the Western pear (P. communis), and the Chinese pear (P. bretschneideri) are all cultivated in Japan. The trees range in height from 7 to 15 meters. The leaves are ovate with serrated edges. The 5-petaled white flowers, 2-3 cm in diameter, bloom in spring. Edible fruits are produced in the fall. The fruits are spherical to distorted ovals, 10-20 cm in diameter. The rind color is yellow or orange or brown, and the flesh is white. Japanese pears can be eaten immediately after harvesting, while Western pears need to be ripened in above-ground storage after harvesting.
In terms of texture, Japanese pears are moist, crisp, and crunchy with many stone cells. Pears are finely textured and chunky.
Chinese pears are not available in Japan, so I have never eaten them. Pears grown in China are called "white pears" and are believed to be a hybrid of the pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) and the Michinoku pear (Pyrus ussuriensis), and have white flesh.
