What is Salvia miltiorrhiz
Salvia miltiorrhiz commonly called as Danshen ,Chinese red sage, (Scientific Name: Salvia miltiorrhiza) is a cold-hardy deciduous perennial herb in the Lamiaceae family, native to China and used as a medicinal herb. It grows in sunny mountainous areas in its native habitat and is also cultivated. It is also known by the names "Sekijin" or "Ketsujin".
The plant reaches a height of 40–80 cm and branches well. The entire plant is covered with yellowish-white soft hairs and glandular hairs. The stem has four ridges. The leaves are long-petioled and opposite. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound, composed of 3 to 7 leaflets, which are ovate, 2–7 cm long, with acute tips and blunt serrated margins.
From May to August, it extends racemes from the top of the flower stems, bearing 3 to 10 blue-purple labiate flowers about 2 cm long in stages on green calyxes. From August to September, it produces small oval nutlets.
Uses
The root is used as the medicinal herb "Danshen." Danshen is believed to help improve blood circulation and alleviate menstrual irregularities.
Origin of the Name
The Chinese name "丹参(Danshen)" comes from the red root ("丹") and its resemblance to ginseng ("参"). The Japanese name (Tanjin) is based on the Chinese name. The genus name "Salvia" means "sage." The species name "miltiorrhiza" is a compound of the Greek words "miltos" (red ochre) and "rhizoma" (root), referring to the red roots used in medicine.
