What is Crested tomgue fern

Crested tomgue fern, scientifically known as Pyrrosia lingua f. cristata, is a variant of the evergreen fern Pyrrosia lingua belonging to the Polypodiaceae family.
Its distinguishing feature is the cresting of the leaf tip, resembling the horns of a lion.

The creeping rhizome is wiry, firm, and grows vigorously, producing roots at various points to adhere to dry rocks or trees.
Leaves grow sparsely on the rhizome, each attached at the end of a petiole. They are leathery, thick, and elliptical, with one leaf growing at a time.
There are two types of leaves: sterile leaves and fertile leaves.
This plant has been cultivated as a traditional ornamental garden plant since the Edo period in Japan.

The genus name, Pyrrosia, originates from the Greek word "Pyrohos" (red), referring to the reddish-brown underside of the leaves.
The species epithet, lingua, is derived from the Greek word meaning "tongue-shaped," describing the leaf’s form.
The variant name, cristata, means "crest" in Greek, also referencing the leaf shape.
